About This Experience
This is the long way to see the Matterhorn, and for travellers based in Geneva without a rail plan it is the simplest. A coach runs the length of Lake Geneva and up the Rhone valley to Tasch, where an electric shuttle covers the last stretch into car-free Zermatt.
The day gives you free time in Zermatt itself - the old quarter of dark timber granaries, the Kirchbrucke photo point, and the village's head-on view of the Matterhorn from 1,620 m. An optional cable-car upgrade takes you to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise at 3,883 m.
Be clear-eyed about the shape of it: thirteen hours, with a large share of that on the coach. What you gain is a Matterhorn day with no logistics. What you give up is time at altitude - and the Gornergrat Railway is not part of this itinerary.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this trip include the Gornergrat Railway?
No. This day trip covers Zermatt village and an optional Glacier Paradise cable car. The Gornergrat cogwheel train is a separate ticket - buy it in Zermatt during your free time, or stay overnight and do it properly.
How long is the day?
Around 13 hours door to door from Geneva, with a substantial share of that on the coach in each direction.
Is it better to take the train from Geneva instead?
If you are comfortable with connections, the rail route via Visp is faster and lets you set your own timings, including the Gornergrat train. The coach trip's advantage is that nothing is left for you to arrange.
Can I add the cable car later?
Yes - the Glacier Paradise upgrade can be bought on site on the day, which lets you wait and see what the weather does.
