Most first-time visitors need one straightforward product: a return ticket from Zermatt to Gornergrat. The choices become less obvious if you hold a Swiss rail pass, plan to hike part of the route, want to visit Matterhorn Glacier Paradise on the same day or are travelling in winter.
This guide explains the options without turning every fare into a separate decision.

The operator’s June 2026 price sheet, checked on 14 September 2026, lists these full fares per adult for Zermatt–Gornergrat:

The same sheet also lists lower fares to intermediate stations. For example, the summer full-fare return from Zermatt is CHF 114 to Rotenboden, CHF 84 to Riffelberg and CHF 58 to Riffelalp. A cheaper intermediate ticket can make sense when a traveller is visiting one specific stop and does not want the summit. For a first visit, saving a modest amount by skipping Gornergrat itself is rarely the best trade-off.
Return ticket or one-way ticket?
Choose the return ticket if you want the summit experience and intend to come back by train. It is the lowest-risk option because downhill alpine hikes can close owing to snow, ice or poor visibility even when the railway is running.
A one-way ticket suits confident hikers with an open, suitable route. Do not buy one merely because walking downhill sounds easy. Descents are hard on knees, conditions change with altitude, and the full route to Zermatt is much longer than the short tourist walk to the viewpoint.
If your plan is to ride from Zermatt to Gornergrat, walk down to Riffelberg and take the train from there, compare the dedicated Hiking Ticket with separate point-to-point fares.
Is Gornergrat included in the Swiss Travel Pass?
Not in full. The Swiss Travel Pass normally gives a 50% reduction on the ordinary Gornergrat Railway fare; it does not make the mountain train free. The Swiss Half Fare Card and qualifying Half-Fare or GA products also receive reductions on relevant tickets.
This distinction matters because visitors sometimes assume all Swiss trains are fully included. The Gornergrat Railway is a mountain excursion, so a discounted supplementary ticket is still required.
Carry the pass or card that proves your reduction. Eligibility and child age bands can vary by ticket and season, so select the correct reduction in the official checkout rather than assuming every product uses identical rules.
Child fares and Junior Card
Children under six generally travel free when accompanied. The operator’s current fare information also offers reduced travel for older children and free travel for eligible children travelling with a valid Junior Card or Children’s Co-Travelcard and the required accompanying adult.
The exact age boundary differs on some seasonal products. The June price PDF also appears to reverse its summer/winter footnote markers, so confirm the child fare for your travel date instead of interpreting the asterisks alone. For example, the 2026 Peak2Peak information applies the child reduction from age nine, while the standard summer fare sheet describes a different child band. Enter each child’s age and card status in the booking system and check the displayed price before paying.
Should you buy Gornergrat tickets online?
Online purchase is usually the most convenient option. A direct operator e-ticket can save time at the ticket counter. Marketplace bookings may have different redemption instructions: check whether your voucher must be exchanged before boarding. Buying online does not improve the weather, though, so there is a sensible balance:
- Book once the forecast is useful if your schedule is flexible and views are your priority.
- Book earlier for a fixed peak-season date or if you want a special product.
- Reserve limited departures—such as sunrise trips and NostalChic Class—as soon as your plan is firm.
- Read cancellation and change conditions before purchase; do not assume a mountain ticket is fully flexible.
Is Priority Boarding worth adding?
Priority Boarding is a separate CHF 7 surcharge for the uphill Zermatt–Gornergrat journey. It allows access to a dedicated waiting area and boarding three minutes before other passengers. The practical benefit is seat choice, particularly a right-side window seat for Matterhorn views.
It is most useful for photographers, families who want to sit together and visitors travelling at a busy time. It is less important on a quiet departure or if you are content to stand briefly and choose any available seat. The priority entrance closes ten minutes before departure, so the add-on has no value if you arrive late.
When should you choose a combination ticket?
Peak2Peak Ticket
The operator’s Peak2Peak Ticket connects Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and Gornergrat using the Riffelberg Express between Furi and Riffelberg. It is designed for a single full day and can be travelled in either direction. It is only sold while the seasonal connecting lift is operating.
Gornergrat round-trip ticket
The operator’s Gornergrat round-trip is a circular experience rather than a simple out-and-back train ride. One current version uses cable cars from Zermatt via Furi to Riffelberg, the cogwheel railway to Gornergrat and the train back to Zermatt. Availability is tied to the Riffelberg Express operating season.
Winter and Sledging Passes
A Winter Pass adds a summit return journey, equipment hire and repeat rides between Riffelberg and Rotenboden during the published 11:00–16:00 window. It is not an unlimited pass for the whole railway. The Sledging Pass includes sledge hire and repeat rides on that same section from 11:00 to 16:00, plus travel from Zermatt to Rotenboden and back; it does not reach Gornergrat. Check snow status before buying.

Booking mistakes to avoid
- Do not confuse Gornergrat Railway tickets with Matterhorn Glacier Paradise cable-car tickets.
- Do not assume the Swiss Travel Pass covers the full fare.
- Do not select a one-way ticket before checking the trail status.
- Do not buy a seasonal combination ticket without confirming the Riffelberg Express is running.
- Do not rely on an old blog’s price table; mountain fares and age rules change.
When the Swiss Travel Pass is still worth it
Compare the cost of your complete Swiss itinerary before buying a pass. A journey across several regions with multiple transport days can make a Swiss Travel Pass useful; a stay focused on Zermatt needs a different calculation. Compare point-to-point tickets plus a Half Fare Card with the full pass price. Consecutive-day and flexible-day passes suit different travel patterns; check activation, delivery and cancellation instructions for the option you choose.
The cheaper mountain, and the one that is not the same product
Compare current prices rather than assuming one mountain is always cheaper. Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is a separate cable-car excursion, not another way to use an ordinary Gornergrat train ticket. Choose a return for a summit visit with train travel both ways. If you will hike between Gornergrat and Riffelberg, compare the Hiking Ticket rather than assuming you must walk all the way to Zermatt after buying a one-way fare.
Can I use one ticket for multiple trips up in a day?
Plan a standard return as one outward and one homeward journey with permitted stopovers, not repeated summit ascents. The Winter and Sledging Passes permit repeat travel only on their specified section and within the published hours.
